What is the Ha Giang Loop?

A Tour Adventure Like No Other!

The Ha Giang Loop has gained significant popularity post-Covid thanks to social media and influencers posting their adventures on TikTok. Many people know the name and have seen glimpses of the stunning scenery, but what exactly IS it and how does it work?

TLDR: The Ha Giang Loop is tour that takes place in the northern mountain range in Vietnam. Typically the groups go by motorbike, but car and jeep tours are also available. You pack a bag for the duration of your tour, depart from Ha Giang City with your group and spend the next 2, 3, or 4 days touring around the province and sleeping in local homestays at the end of the day.

The first thing that will simplify your Ha Giang Loop research is that, although there are different companies offering tours and slightly different inclusions, the BASE tour remains the same! Everything you’re seeing on social media and influencer reels comes from tour companies offering essentially the same concept. Now, just because it’s the same concept does NOT mean it’s the same experience – if you would like a comparison of the different options please read “What are my options on the Ha Giang Loop?”

At present (September 2025), the main draw for tourist to the region is the Ha Giang Loop Tour. If you are wondering what else there is to do in this region, the answer is: not a ton. There are a few companies offering a combined Ha Giang and Cao Bang Tour (What is the Cao Bang Loop?) and even fewer companies offering trekking in the region but currently the claim to fame is simply this tour loop. That being said, this tour loop is often hyped up as one of the best experiences in SE Asia and honestly, it doesn’t disappoint!

So let’s get into it – what exactly is the Ha Giang Loop?

The Ha Giang Loop can be completed in 2, 3 or 4 days. Typically travellers choose to do it in 3 or 4 days, depending on their travel timeline. (“What are the differences between the 3-Day and 4-Day tours”). The typical mode of transportation is on the back of a motorbike driven by a local “Easy Rider”, however self-driving, car and jeep options are also available.

The tours take you on essentially a loop of the Ha Giang province where you ca see impressive mountain ranges, stunning waterfalls, rice terraces and ethnic villages. Your meals are included as part of the tour and typically the companies offer activities as part of the tour package. Each night of the tour is spent in a different village and you stay in a homestay owned by a local family. These homestays vary in amenities from luxury to budget so ensure you do research on the company you select to understand the room options.
